Roadrunner Rally 2015

Roadrunner MC gathered for their seventh Rally back on July, 2015. All original charter members maintaining perfect attendance. I figure it is time to introduce charter members. Not all of our individual members have Gang names yet, but here are the ones that do:

Elvis, Priscilla, Bee, Queen Bee and Benny

Gang names is an organic thing I believe. So as of yet none of the others have quite fermented a name yet that is quantified and a de facto “Gang” name. One way or another there is still some fermenting of names. Until then our Charter Member cliques (couples)are:

Red Ryder’s Rob and Karen

Hog Rider’s Kimmy and Benny

WingDing’s Lisa and Wayne

The Bee’s Sue and Rob

Elvis and Priscilla Rob and Lori

Screamin’ Eagle Vicki and Dale

Karen is Kimmys’s sister. Karen is Benny’s sister-in-law. Benny is Lisa’s brother. Lisa is Kimmy’s sister-in-law. Rob R  and Wayne are Benney and Kimmy’s brother in law. Rob H is Dale’s brother. Dale is Lori’s brother-in-law. Vicki is RobH and Lori’s sister-in-law. Got all of that. Good, because apparently we can’t and there was some sleeping arrangement confusion

Sleeping Arrangement Confusion

Sleeping Arrangement Confusion

Roadrunner Hangarounds are:

Dan and Shirley

Once a “Hangaround” makes two consecutive Rally’s they can request to become a prospect. Once a “Prospect” the Charter members will vote at Church if “Prospects” are worthy.

2015 Rally Headquarters were at Breezy Point in Northern Minnesota. We had a very nice place with enough rooms for each couple. Only problem was later in the alcohol influenced evening with all the brothers, sisters and assorted in-law’s we tried to photograh everyone for clarity.

Now that you have met the MC I can show you some of our more intimate pictures from our 2015 rally 3 years ago. Had this Blog in the vault and neglected to post it. Will work on posts for the 2016 and 2017 Rally’s to Westby to get everything up to date.

Musings of A Late Blooming Ski Bum

“You Don’t Get Too Old To Ski – You Get Old Because You Don’t Ski”. Thats what it says on the back of one of my t-shirts I bought a few years back. Well in 2014 I did not go skiing while I worked in Alaska, so last January was my first year Skiing after the age of fifty. Altitude and physical shape can really kill the buzz.

My first time skiing in the rockies was back in 1996. I went to Winter Park CO (elev. 11,220′). I was 32 years old, a smoker, and being relatively young, assumed I was in good shape for a mountain Ski trip. Wrong – It was horrific!! Every trip down hill felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. Was quite the challenge for me to finish each run

Winter Park

Winter Park

Two years later I go again. This time to a slightly lower elevation of 10,200′ at Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly Lake Tahoe

Heavenly Lake Tahoe

Having learned from my previous ski trip two years prior, I engaged in some moderate exercise and was able to ski for six days without the difficulty of my first trip. Had a great time with a group of 10 friends renting a condo slopeside. Loved Skiing and the mountains.

Skip ahead 10 years having done no skiing at all. My buddy Steve, having just returned from a family Ski Trip to Steamboat Springs calls with the bug needing to go back, and says lets go!!! I figure why not? He makes arrangements for us to leave in three weeks. With not much time I try to build up my stamina. Having quit smoking 3 months prior, hoping I can endure for three days. First day good. Second day struggle somewhat. Third day my legs burned out and I cried in pain as I made my way down the mountain. Last run I thought would never end. Overall though had a good time and really enjoyed Steamboat and the Skiing. Me and Steve return the next season. For three months before leaving I use an elliptical for 30 to 50 minutes 3 to 5 times a week. Skiing endurance was much better and had good trip. Repeat trip back by myself over the next four years adamantly exercising before each trip. These trips costing me under $1000 dollars as I use Credit Card miles for plane tickets and Steamboat offers 30% off lodging and lift tickets for returning guests. Myself choosing the low budget Motel Rabitt Ears downtown with free buses running to and from Ski hill every 10 minutes.

Rabbit Ears Motel

Rabbit Ears Motel

My Skiing improving vastly each year as I get more comfortable on my edges. Skiing trees and Double Black Diamonds. Each trip I get up early, make first Gondola up, and do first tracks of the day. Enjoy the hell out of the serenity of the Mountain and the views. Solace for my soul. After eight to ten runs I stop for an early lunch as mountain begins filling up with families and late sleepers. As I finish my lunch, the late arriving skiers make their way in for rest and food, and I mostly get mountain back to myself again as they filter in.

Well this year I go back. Busier then ever with work, holidays and family issues I only hit the elliptical 6 to 8 times a month for previous three before skiing. First day I am sluggish to get moving and have zero energy to go. Feeling totally exhausted, think to myself “maybe I am too old too ski and altitude too much”. Get myself up and in line to catch first Gondola up once again. Being a seasoned veteran of six previous trips I know the mountain well and head for some mellow runs. Do a few and get a little energy from being on the mountain. Make my way to Stokers Bar at mid-mountain for my break/lunch and hope to see Dani the Bartender who has served me lunch and drinks for the past five years. She not knowing me from Adam, but every year when I sit down and say “Jack Coke please”, she responds every time with “sure Minnesota”. First year/time I responded back “How do you know I am from Minnesota?” which she replied “accent and only Minnesotans ask for a Jack Daniels and Coke that way” ?? Well that trip and all subsequent trips I look forward to my break conversing, eating and getting to know all of the local ski bums, who stop in Stokers early like me, and enjoy her conversation. She’s somewhat of a local institution. Each trip by my second day she always has my drink waiting for me and no need to order. This year I walk in and no Dani. Bummer!! Order a drink and get some food. Hour and half later with three drinks in me I hit the slopes again feeling much better. Only muster enough energy though for three more runs. Quit early to save my energy and legs for two more days skiing.

Second day of skiing get up and feel much better. Again arrive early and catch one of the first Gondola’s up. Cruise through several runs on a variety of terrain. Feeling great as I criss cross around the mountain. Go to stop for lunch and ride up to Stokers when I finally make my first ever hook up with a snow bunny

I got the pleasure of this ride by attempting to speed by a gaggle of toddlers with their instructor. As I attempted to speed by to  jump on lift, I hear the instructor yell ” Whoaa there buddy!!” I hit my brakes quickly and hearing question to finish, “would you mind taking one of my students up with you and that wont fit on chair with me?”. I say “Sure”. After years of seeing toddlers of this age I reach for the nape of her neck and pull her along into loading spot. Me being more nervous then her, and acting like a Helicopter parent, try to ensure she gets planted on chair safely. Well as I did this I discovered not necessary, she handled the chair mounting procedure better then most adult recreational skiers. Seated quickly and off we go. Attempt some small talk and only get head nods yes or no to questions as she blankly stared straight ahead. She’s here with Mom and Dad. Has older brother and sister. Is 3. Does not want safety bar down. Shes not scared. OK then!! Smiling to myself I stop with the third degree questioning and imagine how is she skiing down a mountain at 3!! Then it dawns on me, this story will be better with video. Fire up camera and as you saw, she is not very interactive. Ask a few more questions before realizing she must think I am nuts. Top approaching fast I stop filming and get ready for lift departure, readying  myself to assist if needed. Assistance is not needed. Now for all of you recreational skiers you may not want to watch this video. We reached the top and McKenzie rockets off her seat to get away from man with questions. She casually begins down mountain gaining speed as she catches up with her group.

Onto lunch. With no Dani and vibe changed , I get back out after only an hour. Do note getting dehydrated at altitude happens quickly. With all lunch stops I do have an electrolyte beverage and several glasses of H2O along with my meal and drinks. Hit the slopes and enjoy an afternoon of some of the best runs of my life in and out of trees. Back country and groomers. Realizing another day to go I call it a day after about six runs.

Back at hotel I get cleaned up and catch bus for downtown. Normally I stay downtown, this year though at the Holiday Inn halfway to mountain. Well friends and family alike familiar with me know, I may just have to indulge in some of Colorado’s newest law changes. Legalized Marijuana dispensaries. Take bus here

Green Leaf Marijuana Dispensary

Golden Leaf Marijuana Dispensary

For a lifelong Bogart like I, inside is an Eden of disbelief. Variety of names and strains that is overwhelming. Well I may be a lifelong toker, but over the years I have cut back considerably. In fact friend and family tokers know this as I always decline partaking when offered. I now smoke exclusively late night while watching TV or exercising at home if at all. Ask sales person for something mellow and definitely  no earth shattering strains. Settle on some Purple Haze and purchase Marijuana legally for the first time in my life. Catch bus back into town and enjoy dinner at Old Town Pub which was built in 1904. After dinner with drinks and plenty of H2O, back to room and in bed early to rest for last day.

Get up my last day for skiing feeling great. Mountains do revitalize me. Catch shuttle and naturally one of the first Gondolas up. Sunny skies and morning temp of 18 degrees with light wind.

View of Slope from near top with skiers in view to get good perspective.

Top Slope

Top Slope

Feeling great I am aggressively skiing everything and feeling myself smile with every turn. Day befores skiing was great, but somehow this day even better. My energy level and stamina growing with each turn. 10 years previous by the third day the leg burn would not allow me to travel more then 200 yards while making only three turns before stopping. Below is a 3 min clip starting from just about the top. As it starts the stuff on right is entrance to the Double Blacks, trees and cliffs. For safety purposes I keep left until I get to the well groomed Buddys Run. Keep in mind I am not using a Go Pro and using both hands at waist level to poorly attempt to steady camera. This means no poles being used, as you will see in my shadow they are tucked under my arms. Once on the well groomed Buddys Run I casually turn back and forth to keep clear of others, eventually having to stop as slope began to crowd and me needing poles to ensure their and my safety. 10 years ago I could not have skiied that far in 3 minutes. Would have took twenty with stops.

That clip ended at only about a third of the way down that run.

Here’s a couple of Pic’s from years past. First from top after getting on lift at bottom in overcast skies, travelling into and through cloud cover, and eventually escaping clouds to a blue sky at top

Since the Skiing was so good on my last day, and no Dani at Stokers, I changed my routine and grabbed a quick bite here at Four Points. Here is short Video I took on last day which will make top header picture not as scary. This is the spot I took that picture from.

Hello

Well it’s been a year and three days since I posted anything and I got some things to say and show. Have not posted as my time has been consumed by work like it was in the mid 90’s. That is now past me and I will regain my life back. While the last year was not all entirely work, it did consume most of my time.

Since my last post I transformed from my BMW Motorcycle to the Harley world. Love my new bike and when not working we were riding. We took a trip last spring down the Mississippi and in July gathered for our Annual Road Runner Rally. I had also gone skiing last January. Our winter Jamaica trip had to be cancelled as a dear member of our lives, Vicki’s mom Sandy, had passed away way too soon!!!!

July 4th 2007 at Side Lake

July 4th 2007 at Side Lake

Sandy was an amazingly upbeat and positive woman who loved family and friends endlessly. Having Sandy as an ally meant she would forever have your back. Since I met her I had never seen her not look to the positive in everything. Not that she did not have some opinions on things, because she did, but always took the high road and would not dwell in anarchy. She is missed dearly every day by her family and friends. God Bless You Sandy!!

I have two posts I had written about my “2015 Ski Trip” and “2015 Road Runner Rally”. Uploading of pictures was too time consuming with work schedule and prevented me from publishing without them. Well I got a little extra time now and we just returned from our Jamaica vacation that was rescheduled for the one missed. So I got some storeytellin’ to do!! Will upload the pictures and start posting soon.

California Trippin’

Through all of its ups and downs we have been married 27 years. Not all of it completely blissful, but all in all a perfect match that we continually work on, listen, and adjust. Saying things like that over and over till we believe it! Truthfully it does go a lot like that. In the bad times, we understand bumps happen and patiently work our way through. Each, actually appreciating each other more than we did 27 years ago. Last year was the only time we have been apart for our Anniversary while I was working in Alaska. Now having turned 50, and knowing there is lots yet to see and do before we can’t, we decided for our Anniversary to head to California for eight days and rent a Motorcycle to travel up and down the Pacific Coast Highway “1”. Upon arrival though we ran into an old friend.

Goofy

He naturally invited us to his place to visit with some of his friends

Well as you have probably guessed, we also visited Disneyland and recently added California Adventure Park. Back around the turn of the century (yeah you’re old), Disneyland had expanded and added California Adventure Park to make it more of a destination for families like Disneyworld is. California Adventure Park is themed around the state of California and features more current Disney projects like Cars, A Bugs Life, The Little Mermaid and Toy Story.

Entrance to Radiator Springs in California Adventure Park

"Cars" zipping through Radiator Springs.

“Cars” zipping through Radiator Springs.

The “Cars” ride is actually quite exhilarating. You get in a “Cars” car that seat six. You then cruise around the desert before entering Radiator Springs at night. Here you get chased by a thrasher and as you eventually leave town your car either gets a Tire Change or as we got a Car Wash Detailing.

After getting detailed you pull up along another car and……..three-two-one –  gooooooo!!!!!  The Cars take off quickly as you race around the track through banked curves and whop-de-doos to the finish line. Quite fun and by far the best ride we rode.

We arrived in LA on a Saturday afternoon and stayed three nights at a Disney Hotel located  adjacent to the Parks. So we got to spend two full days immersed in Disney and crowds, plus the evening on our arrival and the morning before departing to get Motorcycle. We were not expecting massive crowds, and unfortunately had them due to the Columbus Day holiday. Apparently Utah kids get the day off and the whole state leaves for Disneyland to take advantage of the lower off season rates. Which we did also, but anticipating smaller crowds. They had record crowds for the days we were there that the  Park usually sees during peak times. After the first day and a half we had had enough and were ready to go!! Disneyed out is what Vicki said. The crowds and lines, along with dodging families and their strollers, took there toll on our nerves. Non the less it was already paid for and we endured another day and a half.

We did all of the Disneyland staples Its a Small World, Matterhorn, Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted House and Monorail. Also did the newer rides Indiana Jones Adventure and Star Wars 3-D Simulator experience. Star Wars by far being the best ride at Disneyland itself. On Sunday evening we got to experience “Remember… Dreams Come True” Fireworks Spectacular over Snow Whites Castle. They are spectacular!!

At California Adventure Park we did the Cars, Hollywood Tower of Terror, Soarin over California, Paradise Pier Roller Coaster and Mickey’s Silly Symphony Swings. Took in the Alladin Show and “World of Color” evening water show.

Disney at times with the crowds and lines, felt like torture, but an an experience we were glad we did. Heres a mosaic of  some more Disney Pics

Now onto the main purpose of our trip – “Ride The Pacific Highway On A Motorcycle” and leave Disney behind us. Take a Taxi from Disney to Rental Dealer. Repack our luggage we will use for next four days and store the rest at the dealer. Have some hiccups with Audio that required us buying an adaptor to listen to music as the Bluetooth was not working. Packed and ready we jump onto the 405 which will take us through LA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and  into Burbank. In Burbank we catch the 101 which turns into the Pacific Coast Highway 1 (PCH) in Ventura.  This required driving on 5 lane freeway for 84 miles. From there I had planned to go another 150 miles. But after that white knuckle ride through LA we only made it another 50 miles where I had to quit do to 5 lanes of traffic having taken its toll on me. Also getting dark quick.

Next morning up and  locate this sign

PCH

About 30 miles later finally get to where the road actually begins to hug the coast

PCH

From here we travelled  North up to Big Sur

Big Sur Coastline

Then circle back South and check in at the Ragged Point Inn 50 miles South of Big Sur for the next two nights. Spend three days travelling up and down on the PCH making frequent pit-stops for the vistas.

Also take time to venture down to the waterand remote beaches at various spots to take in the waves pounding on the shore while watching the surfers chase “tubes”.  Sit back and  Chill enjoying a cold  beer and munchies.  Picnic at the Beach.

We also had the opportunity to visit a coastal grove of Redwoods.

These trees need to experienced in person to know how magnificent they are. We were up early and arrived before all other people and had the forest to ourselves. Spent most of the morning here and backpacked in with a couple of cold beers and Deli Sandwiches we purchased just for the occasion.

Stopped at the Big Sur River Inn and enjoyed a cold beverage lounging in the Big Sur River amongst the Redwoods.

Get up the morning of our Anniversary, pack and head South through the small California beach towns of Cambria, Cayucos, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara and finally stop in Ventura to spend the night. For our Anniversary we get a room at the Crown Plaza on the beach. Ventura has a boardwalk, Pier, and restored downtown district from the late 1800’s. We get cleaned up and head into old Ventura for dinner at a delicious Barbeque  joint. After dinner we head across the street and settle into The Star Lounge to celebrate and enjoy some live music.

We enjoy our evening meeting and conversing with several of the locals. Another wonderful Anniversary!!

Our 27th Anniversary celebration.

Our 27th Anniversary Celebration.

Next morning get up for the remaining 85 miles. Its Saturday, but traffic non the less is Bumper to Bumper and not moving. I have seen Lane Splitting done before and always thought that looks dangerous. For those of you who don’t know, Lane Splitting is when motorcycles basically maneuver their way through traffic with main advantage riding down the line. This is legal in California, and keeps motorcycles from overheating. Well now we are stuck in traffic, bike getting hot, wanting to get bike returned so we can enjoy Venice Beach where we are staying for our last night. Vicki against this idea, but also looking to getting to the beach. So after observing other Bikers zoom by us I go for it and jump in. Vicki closes her eyes and puts her head down. Away we go. Once going I feel comfortable and pick up the hang of it. Did this in heavier traffic spots on and off for remainder of our trip. Probably saved us easily an hour. Here’s a link to a youtube video of what Lane Splitting looks like

 http://youtu.be/UcLghntCG9E?t=46s

I found this to be funner than any Disney ride and kind of felt like the old frogger game. Hoping not to get splattered.

Finally get to dealer and return Bike. Catch a cab to Venice where we have room on the beach. Got there about 3pm check in and head out into the freaks at Venice Beach. An Utopia for some who live there in squalor like conditions. Very content and enjoying an existence with non of the normal stresses the rest of civilization battles daily. One lady pointing towards the setting sun who lives there said “Whats not to enjoy? Every day I wake up here and enjoy the beach, weather and people”. She sets up shop daily at various spots up and down the boardwalk reading palms. Her and many more vagrant peddlers everywhere. None of them though ever hassled us. Quite unique and extremely laid back. Most however looking like they could use a shower. Eat dinner on the Boardwalk and then take in the evening spirit of Venice. All I could think was where’s Jim Morrison?

We had our Granddaughter Nicole over today, and as is our Fall Tradition we got out and hiked through some woods to enjoy the Fall colors. This year we ventured up to Interstate Park on the St Croix River in Wisconsin. Other then the weather being a bit nippy, it was a wonderful day.

Later Nicole tried to teach Grandma to Dance

Road Runner Rally 2014

Road Runners had another successful and safe rally. This year we ventured up into Canada and around the North side of Lake Superior.

Get Out and Ride

First morning of our Rally eight of us met up at my and Vicki’s house at 7:30 am to hookup shortly thereafter with the remaining four members at breakfast in Nowthen.

Hansen Driveway

From there we traveled up to Virginia MN for our first of seven nights staying at a different location each night. First order of business each night upon arrival is asking clerk “How long does it take the cops to show up?”  This always elicits a quizzical look, followed by apprehension, and finally relief, as they realize Road Runners are not as scary as Wiley E Coyote.

We settle in and order pizza, which is a staple of a Road Runner Rally diet. Spent the evening quickly reestablishing our bonds as a MC gang. The only issue we had was Tony the Pizza guy stalking Kimmy. As in all groups, the need for someone to take charge can be a hurdle. This night Kimmy stepped up to the plate and ordered our pizza’s. Well Tony was working the phones at Domino’s, and Kimmy, through no fault of her own, apparently enamored this guy somehow with our pizza order. Pizza gets delivered and we chow it down. No leftovers or any one left hungry. No problems right…..

Until Kimmy’s phone rings and she reluctantly answers a call from an unknown caller. Caller identifies himself as “Tony” and asks her to join him in a parade handing out candy. Somewhat bewildered, she says shes “busy with friends and would be unable to do so.” He insists, and Kimmy responds that her husband would not appreciate him asking her to do anything. Tony, being persistent, continues asking anyway. Finally totally creeped out she says “I have to goooo……..”   and hangs up phone completely frazzled. Thats when I walk out from my room as Kimmy is determining that could not have been Tony, because she used another phone for ordering Pizza, and there was no way for Tony to have her number. Realizing the only creep that may have called was from within our group, she quickly turns her gaze at me leaving my room…

@#$%&!  Dale!!!” she shouts in my direction!

Kimmy is as good a sport as she is a friend, and accepts the prank with great reverence. Sorry Kimmy, I love you!! We had them light up this sign though in case Tony did show up.

Sorry No Tony

Next morning prepping for  9 am kickstands up departure.

What May I Do For You?

We depart Virginia MN and head for Ely. In Ely we stop at the “International Wolf Center” and got a chance to observe five wolves in captivity. Fun to see, but also sad knowing they only have 1.25 acres to roam.

???????????????????????????????

From Ely we travel down Hwy 1 along the edge of the BWCA. We stop at the only establishment located 2/3rds of the way to Lake Superior. Here we run into canoeist’s who slowed our Bartender down while they got BWCA access permits.

Finally give our cheeks a break, face and bottom, and enjoy a beverage.

We finally hit the North Shore and fall into formation with my BMW riding in the middle.

We travel North toward Thunder Bay and realizing Canadian Beer is expensive, we should stock up before crossing the border. Then realize its Sunday, and Minnesota conservative laws don’t do off sale. Unless its “Duty Free”. We discover there is a Duty Free store 1/3 mile short of the border that sells on Sundays and will carry your goods to Border Crossing station and hand off said goods. Smiles around since we will be saving $20.00 per case of beer. Van drove up as we stopped at Border and within in 30 seconds handed off our load so quickly that this was the only picture I could snap as he closed his door and sped off

Once delivered, and within complete view of border crossing guards, we pack in our haul.

We make it to Thunder Bay and settle in for the evening to enjoy our haul. No terrorizing tonight.

Wild Nights

That more or less is a typical day for us. Sleep and repeat. Stopped and saw some waterfalls along the way.The weather as we had anticipated, and been warned, was on the cooler side. Nothing bone chilling cold and we did dress accordingly. Mostly overcast skies with small showers and drizzle intermittent throughout the ride. Only down pour was for about 35 minutes, which unfortunately, occurred during our Border Crossing back into the US at Sault Ste Marie. Its a high bridge that crosses over a nautical navigation channel. Our overnight stops were in order Virginia, MN –  Thunder Bay, Ontario – White River, Ontario – Sault Ste Marie, MI – Marquette, MI – Ontonagon, MI -And Hayward, WI. I totaled up 1850 miles on my BMW for the trip.

Road Runners Ride Again

About to embark on another adventure with our MC Club. This rally we are going to circle Lake Superior. Me and Vic are looking very forward to spending time with our friends and family. Great group of people. Will give a report upon our return.

I have been extremely busy with my return to work, so its been months since I have blogged. Blog service I use does not tell me who visits, but does tally visitors. I somehow average 15-25 visits a week since my last blog. Some days none, some days up to ten. Dont know who visits, or if they are just random web hits, but surprised to see anyone looking while I have been so inactive. Got a few I have written on of a more personal nature, but hesitant to post. I figure to post them after my rally report, so as not to sound all serious after such a long break from writing. Also need to post a Jamaica Part 2 Trip Report. Soon come.

Hope to Blog more soon for those who enjoy them and have asked for more. Thanks to everyone for their interest and compliments.

We Know, So We Go…..Jamaica

Lounging

People wonder why we go back to the same place year after year. Well in reality it is not the same place, just different places on the same Island Paradise.

Warm Weather- Check. Turquoise Water- Check. Palm Trees- Check. Drinkable Water- Check. Speak English- Check. No Hurries- Check.  Warm, Friendly, Smiling Faces- Check. Relaxation- Check. Add it all together and it equals “No Problem Mon!”

Mostly our Winter vacation is for us is to get away and unwind. Our familiarity with Jamaica and its people help us kick back. Not try and squeeze things in new places with no real idea if it is worth our time. Rethinking what we would do next time we visit. Well if you go somewhere different, there is no next time. Regrets of wasted vacation time following the herds, is not very relaxing, and actually kind of stressful for me!! Besides, it is not like we don’t visit other places. In the last fifteen years we have been to Niagara Falls, the Smokey Mountains, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Steamboat Springs, Los Angeles, Miami, the Florida Keys, Chicago, Playa Del Carmen, Salmon fishing in Alaska, Cozumel, Tulum Mexico, Fort Myers, Puerta Vallarta, Wisconsin. Rode  motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Highway, driven across the Sierra Nevada, seen a Broadway Play in NYC, Times Square, toured the White House, got a private tour of our Nations Capital in DC with MN Congressman Erik Paulsen who took us to the top of the Rotunda to step outside just under the Statue of Freedom that sits on top and view all of Washington DC (the Capital is the highest point in DC), plus lots of Motorcycle adventures. And personally I worked up in the Artic Circle for twelve cumulative weeks.

All sounds a bit audacious, but we are asked constantly why don’t we venture out and go someplace else. We do!!

Back to what we know….Jamaica. It was great to be back and see the friends we have gotten to know over the years. Hearing Elkies exorbitant voice greeting us with “What’s up Mon? Where’s my fish?” immediately makes us melt. Elkie has a tremendous smile and infectious, fun loving attitude that is therapy to our soul. I cant imagine a trip to the Island and not visiting with Elkie.

We generally split our time staying at two or three different places when we go. The last few years Couples Negril has always been our ending place. Carefree and no worries. Upscale food and Top Shelf spirits always available any time. Hobie Cats, Kayaks, Boccee Ball Courts, Beach Volleyball, Pool Volleyball and a Spa with Tree Fort in the Palms on the beach for massages. Best Pool and Swimup Bar in all of Jamaica. Expansive, pristine, calm waters with all sand beach. Beach/pool loungers always available, no chair saving game needed. No kids. Always at full capacity but never crowded. Scuba diving with great Dive Team and boat. All diving no more than fifteen minute trip and back on beach by 10:30 am. The faces and smiles of all the staff. Omar, Tenneyson, Floy, Camille, Cammilla, Charles, Lindon, Tanesha, Ivy, Mareesa, Richard, Stephen to name a few. The best housekeeper in the world Shirnett. Shirnett always has a smile and the sweetest voice in all of Jamaica. She has been our housekeeper for three consecutive years and she is always the recipient of some of the gifts we bring to deliver to these wonderful people.

Tanesha, Elkie and Omar

Tanesha, Elkie and Omar

Couples is not cheap. With that price comes some of the best people. The jobs there are some of the best for Jamaicans to have. They are paid better and tenure and longevity is there trademark. They are not hustlers, and do not need to become one to survive. Many people go to Jamaica and despise it. They are harassed at cruise ship ports and Tourist beaches. The Jamaicans they encounter are scary and aggressive. Understand there is no industry or jobs. They need to eat and survive. Our adventures in Jamaica mostly take us away from these places. The people are genuine and honest. Subsistence way of life is done by many who have never been to Negril, Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. Friendly and kind is there nature. That is what had attracted people to begin with. Jamaican genuineness.

This year we stayed only at Couple’s Negril and are only adventures, besides me scuba diving, were a couple of Motorcycle day trips along the South Coast, up into the hills, and venturing deep West End.

When arrived we immediately felt at home. Reaquanting ourselves with familiar faces. Both Staff and guests. Lots of guest repeaters. Shortly after our arrival I run down to Scuba Shack to get signed up for following mornings dive. Say hello to Richard who certified me three years ago as an Advanced Open Water diver. All set for tomorrows 9 am dive.

I myself do not eat sweets and treats, but I am telling you, the variety and quality of offerings from Couples Dessert Chef is too incredible for me to ever pass up. I have a minimum of two to three different desserts each night while there. MMMMmmmmmmm…………. Above picture is only a partial view. More on far side and in front of server. Could not get all of it in the picture as I wanted to try and get some detail

After dinner we try to stay for the show but peter out early. Next morning up around 7 am. Pastries and coffee delivered to our room. Enjoy morning coffee from Balcony looking out towards beach and ocean

I head off and do my first dive while Vicki goes to the Spa and gets a Pedicure. Meet up together about 10:30 am and find spot on beach to kick back. Each lounger has a foam pad that also serves as a floatie. We spend time in the water, on the beach, enjoying Frozen Drinks with fresh fruits!! Wonder up to Beach Bar/Bistro as needed throughout the day to quench appetite. By afternoon we generally make our way to the Pool and Swim Up Bar adjacent to beach.

Swim Up Bar

After day of frolicking in Sun we make our way to room to rest and clean up for Dinner and a show. Usually down for the count by 10 pm. Rinse and repeat daily unless out for the day on one of our adventures.

Second day of our trip we leave the resort late afternoon for the 1 1/4 mile walk down the beach to “Office of Nature” Rum Bar (pictured on top) owned by a Rasta named Bingee for Sunset. This has become our Sunset hangout with locals the past few years. We walk through the adjacent Spanish “RIU” Resort and immediately are grateful for Couples, as this part of Beach is crowded, noisy, and full of  kids scattering about screaming and yelling. As we are leaving RIU beach we pass another Jamaican bar on the beach where the screaming of kids begins to disapate and local kids become more prevelant as we leave the resort area and proceed down this pristine beach with no development. As we approach I am alarmed to see—

Sad to See!!

Sad to See!!

…..A fence with three rings of barbed wire ontop. Uh-Oh……..Picture above I took from part way down looking back from where we came. Continue walking and thinking this sucks. We continued on for about 1/4 mile until we got to the place Bingee had set up bar previously . Not there. We continue walking further down as it looks like maybe, hopefully he moved further up the beach. Get there and find an establishment run by Don Fresh still open trying to do business. No patrons there though. We introduce ourselves and order some Cold Red Stripes. Talking with them we find out fence went up 6 days ago and Bingee and most all other local merchants have vacated due to hassle of scaling beach fence and one they have also erected at road,  a 1/4 of a mile through Jungle, which was their normal access. Don Fresh and his crew have to scale two fences just to access beach spot he had been on for years. Apparently Sandals owns the land and put up the fence. Development thought to be coming soon. Problem though is this area is a morass (swamp) from the beach to the road and has remained undeveloped for that reason. To develop would be hard and very expensive for proper infrastructure required for a Resort and no known immediate plans. Non-the-less Sandals, has erected the fences and eliminated the last true untouched beach from the local people. Beach still open for tourists to walk if you do not mind ugly fence.

A little history as to Negril. No resort is taller than the Palm Trees to ensure not becoming Cancun. It is referred to as 7 mile beach which actually consists of two separate beaches. Five mile Long Bay where most resorts and tourists go, and two-mile Bloody Bay which was undeveloped with the exception of Couples which was built in 1998. Another resort (Hedonisim) followed Couples on Bloody Bay. Then RIU built two more gargantuan resorts resembling Mexico themed All-Inclusives leaving only a mile of undisturbed beach area. We always have enjoyed Bloody Bay as it is far superior in Beach quality and very peaceful and reminiscent of island chill. Change… here it is again.

Anyway as we talk and enjoy our beers it begins to cloud up and looks like rain. And rain it did

The noise is the sound of the rain. We waited until we thought it was over, say our goodbyes and start back. Two minutes into our walk begins a heavy downpour. We scatter up to a Blue Tarp for shelter and find it has two others there also seeking shelter from rain. Mind you, we like to be adventurous, but I also try not to set us up for trouble by doing something that provides the criminal element an opportunity. Such as out at night with with heavy rains and no one around for 1/3 of a mile or so. My dobber is up immediately as I survey situation and immediately, and friendly like, introduce ourselves and ask their names. Young tall man, obviously not a tourist, kindly responds and says his name is Mark, and welcome to his shelter. OK here comes the shakedown. Mark then proceeds to ask the second guy that was under the tarp what his name was and he responds accordingly, looking also somewhat scared, and indicates he’s from Canada. We talk and nothing is asked from us. As we are talking, a small, drunken, older Rasta and his companion come stumbling up toting a cooler looking for shelter. Ahhhh. Cold beverages. I ask his name and make introductions around our tarp and proceed to ask to buy a couple beers if he has them. He lights up and smiles and says certainly my friends. Canadian indicates he would like one also. Rasta hands Canadian beer and says two dollars, turns and hands me two beers, and says 6 dollars. For the purpose of camaraderie I say “whoa” there buddy, you just charged him 2 bucks. He back pedals nervously some, never retreating with price, and we haggle back and forth in a good spirited way. He sensing I am not some cheap bastard, and me knowing,  hey we got beer and he needs the 2 extra dollars more than I do. So I say how about I give you eight dollars and you give my friend Mark here, who is graciously providing us shelter, a beer also. Rasta smiles and pulls out another Red Stripe and hands it to Mark, who is appreciative and says thanks. I hand Rasta a $10 dollar bill and say keep the change. He lights up with a joyful smile and the six newly made friends spend the next 45 minutes chit chatting and truly enjoying each other. Rain stopped and me and Vic departed for our 15 minute walk back to Couples in the dark.

All for now. Will finish report soon.

Friends

Well I do have some great friends with many memories. Had hoped to get more of us together for a party and only two showed up. Family commitments or something like that and rather short notice on my part. Well my buddies Jim and Sean did show. I turned 50 on Jan17, Jim on Jan27 and Sean Jan 28. We three were able to celebrate plenty and had a great evening of storytelling.

Me, Sean and Jim

Me, Sean and Jim. The glasses are a new thing for the three of us.

Me and Jim go back to Kindergarten. Sean the second grade. To be honest, in grade school we were not close or best buds, but did occasionally do things together. Our bond grew tight after about the age of fourteen. We had some wild times, that when reflecting back, is alarming some of the things we were doing at such a young age. We had just missed the haze of the Sixties and did our best in the late Seventies and early Eighties to make up for it. The experimenting and partying was insane and incredibly wild. The three of us had a great time reflecting and being together again.

On this night when we got together our biggest laughs came from Jimmy regaling us with stories of his time in East Asia and Taiwan teaching English. The adventures both scary and exhilarating. Jim for most of his life has lived on the edge. We also reminisced over our trip together to California in 1986. The three of us were 22 and decided to take a trip to California. Landed in San Francisco with no plan except to be in San Diego eight days later for our flight home. Honestly that first night was a miracle we did not get arrested. Not exaggerating at all. Ask me about it sometime if interested, because elaborating too much here not good idea. An adventure to be remembered for sure.

Besides Jim and Sean, Vicki was naturally there

Vic and Jimmy

To friends everywhere take care and hope to see you soon!

BUDDY

Buddy

What can I say. We had a fabulous weekend in Chicago and got up close and personal with Blues Legend Buddy Guy.

He started playing just before 11 pm and did not stop until 1:30 am. Bright light was from PBS cameras that were there recording show to be broadcast at somtime to be determined. Place very small and intimate and they had six different cameras set up.

Vic and I enjoyed the show tremendously as you can see.Buddy_DVH
